DIRECTDRAW ERROR(DDERR_UNSUPPORTED)

Alright, so I've been getting this error for awhile now, and it's really starting to piss me off. When I try to play my game, or any other RPG maker game, in full screen, I get this error:

If I restart my computer, the error goes away temporarily, but then returns again at some random time. This isn't the only directx error I've been getting though. After close my laptop for awhile then open it up again, my icons start turning into these fuzzy color pigments, and then eventually my entire desktop turns into this stuff. I'd show you all a pic of it, but it's not doing it right this second (though I know it will soon). It's obvious something is wrong with my directx, but I've updated it recently and it still hasn't helped. I've looked around the internet and some other people have had similar problems, but I haven't found a solution yet. I'm not really sure what to do. Anyone have any ideas?

On-screen graphics corruption sometimes indicates a failing video card. We won't know for certain until we consider the situation more thoroughly, but do keep that possibility in mind.
No, with DirectDraw, it's very common for your graphics to look weird exiting a full screen app if the app crashed a little before closing. Back when I used to write stuff for DirectDraw, I saw this all the time if my game crashed before it ended.

The latter problem related to desktop graphics corruption sounded like it occurs when the laptop is left on (I assume standby mode since the lid is closed?) for a period of time and not necessarily related to DirectDraw.

Of course, I don't know what is or was running on the laptop during or before that period of time and I'm not familiar with the DirectX API, so it's probably best to take my posts here with a grain of salt!
rpg maker is mocking you

unsupported, dderr!
The thing that makes me cringe a bit is how they format their error dialog boxes:

"This is the message (%s)" and the error code given to me by the API goes in the ()

This is exactly how I formatted mine.

Anyway, DDERR_UNSUPPORTED is well, a problem in your video card driver. DirectDraw asks your driver something and if you're driver is sometimes responding with a "No, I can't do this" then I think you should re-install your video driver and not just DX. Besides this uses like DX7 or so, unless you bought a Windows 98 machine I think you have the latest DX files for this thing. Forgot with DX7 was released..
The #1 fix to graphical issues is to update your video card drivers
