DOING IT!

A community effort.

What is DOING IT!?
This, my friends, is an idea I've had bouncing around for a while. It's a way to encourage us to do more work on our games and is completely voluntary. DOING IT! is a small ongoing series of prompts that will help us fulfill certain areas of our game-making/hobby enjoying whilst gaining both feedback, a sense of accomplishment and allowing a small look into the design and implementation processes that most of us have when creating. This isn't meant to be something on a grand scale. No. DOING IT! is aimed at the smaller, simpler parts of creating, so as not to get in the way of your main ideas and creations.

How does it work?
Every week I'll put up a prompt in a new topic and throughout the week everyone who wants to can work on completing that prompt. The prompts will be quite simple to fulfill and everyone is encouraged to try to add something, or at least leave feedback on something that has been added. All prompts will be quite different, so there will be things for everyone to be able to try. And keep in mind that though a new one would 'run' each week, there'd be no problems with going back and adding 'entries' or feedback to previous weeks.

Prompts?
As said, there will be many kinds of prompts. This means that not only will there be graphical ones, but written, musical, statistical and any other additional prompts that can be thought of. What types of prompts can be expected? Easy ones! Small ones! Don't-get-in-the-way-of-your-making ones!
Things like:
- make/start a characterset for your game
- give a background to an NPC
- find/make a midi/mp3 for an area in your game
- create a monster
- brainstorm a quest
- sum up your game (if you have one) in 10 words or less
- make a small map (inner/forest/city/cave)
- item creation
- battle character set up/creation
- edit an existing/older map to be at your current mapping standards
Among others!

How can you help?
Well, to begin with I want to see how an idea like this would be received in the community. I'm not asking for sign-ups or commitments. I just want to know if people would like to see something like this happen.

Also, ideas for prompts. All types - from getting into the mind of your main character, to trying to figure out how to get a script idea to work, to showing off a new monster sprite. Any ideas are worthy of consideration as long as they're small, easy to do and be done with and don't distract from the main focus of making. These prompts are meant to inspire work, not detract from it. ^.^

So, thoughts? Questions? Suggestions?

If you can think of some prompts that may help your own projects, post them up. The more choices we have for prompts the better! If we get enough I may be able to have two prompts every now and then to accommodate different types of projects better.

I'm down for this.

Problem: My current project might not be able to meet all of these prompts. For example, it does not use maps, so making a map is out of the question. Would I add to an earlier entry in that case instead?

Sure, or leave feedback for someone else's maps. It's up to each person if they'd like to participate in that weeks' prompt or not, whether it works for their game or not. That's why I'll try to have many different prompts so that the musicians and non-mappers among us also get to do stuff on their projects.

If you can think of some prompts that may affect your own making experiences, post them up and I'll add them to the growing list. ^.^

(Deliberately snicker-worthy ^.^)
Oh man, I love doing it.

I shall do it.

oh god, i totally read the thread title as 'DONG IT.'

i was hoping for a collection of clever penis puns
This is an excellent idea and I would participate if it were relevant or necessary to my projects. (Muse is non-RPG and would need a completely different set of prompts from everyone else and for Chromatose, those tasks are done by other people. =P)

(I'm intrigued to give it a shot)

*edit*
Damnit now that I think about it it's supposed to be "Boing"

The title of this topic made it sound it involved some kind of big-scale, community-wide orgy. It also made me think of a certain Tone Loc song (not Funky Cold Medina!).

In all seriousness, reading through some of Liberty's sample prompts, there might some of which even I who has nil gamemaking skills could do. And when it's outside of my current abilities, I can always help somebody else.

I love this idea... I think it will help to encourage people to work on their game and keep them more on track with it. I love the idea and will gladly get involved. :)
Sounds intriguing, and it may help get some my small projects a jump-start.

Like Feld said, I love doing it! So let's do it. You. Me. Here. Now.

That's where I got it from, 'cause it was hilarious.
Yeah, this sounds like a nice idea. I'm sure everyone in education is a little busy atm but this doesn't sound like much work. Even at other times, stops those stretches of weeks where absolutely nothing gets done, I guess! Do it.

This is pretty interesting! Though I don't think it will be much help for me. Even with the various activities involved, I have a very rigid and systematic way of making my games that I would be hard-pressed to deviate from.

But I can see how this would help others, so I think it's a good idea!
Getting a bunch of dudes together for "Doing it", huh.
Probably the best name for a community event I've ever heard.

I think it's a nice idea though. I'd do something like this.
