POLLS AND QUESTIONNAIRES
Posts
Is there any chance of polls and/or questionnaires being implemented into our game pages?
It may be useful for getting some mass feedback on your game from people that don't actually want to write anything. Something like:
It may be useful for getting some mass feedback on your game from people that don't actually want to write anything. Something like:
1. The first Bowser fight is..
A. Too hard
B. Hard enough
C. Not hard enough
2. Choose your 3 most useful items:
A. Mushroom
B. Fireflower
C. Feather
D. Star
E. Frog Suit
F. Tanuki Suit
This seems like kind of a pointless feature to me. Are people who don't want to write to improve your game the kind of people you want to take advice from?
Why not? Are their opinions less valid because of that? I can think of many reasons why I wouldn't want to write what I was thinking about X game (time, effort, etc.) and I'll be surprised if that doesn't go for the rest of you.
It'll be good for just getting an opinion on specific issues. Plus, hopefully it's not just one person's opinion, but multiple people's. I mean, If it works for presidency..
Plus, I'd really like to ask things like "Favorite Characters?", just to see who appeals the most, and who's sorely lacking.

While polls are a nice way to get quick, dirty, vague information fast, they discourage discussion, which, to designers, is a very very helpful thing. Look at the blog for Chronology of the Last Era- when Mog has a question/problem/conundrum, he encourages discussion about it to work past it and come up with new, better ideas.
Discussion > Polls.
Discussion > Polls.
But that's only 3-5 people discussing. On top of that, it's just people from the community, which likely have a biased viewpoint. Personally, I'd really like to get the opinions of the more general population.
But then, most people aren't willing to put that much effort into giving their opinions. I mean, you have to register, log in, spend 5-10 minutes writing something, probably spend another 5-10 minutes writing a reply when someone inevitably disagrees with you. Sometimes, I just want to toss my vote into the mix and get out. People are generally lazy right? If you don't make it easier for them to give their opinions, chances are, you're not gonna get an opinion at all.
Anyways, it's not like you can't foster discussion with it. Why not have a poll, and then allow registered users to comment on said poll, ergo allowing discussion? It might even encourage others to register and say something.
Edit: What Azn said.

I really don't see how polling prevents discussion, if you're willing to contribute in terms of discussion then a poll isn't going to prevent that. Unless there is some magical barrier I'm unaware of.
Neok, the problem with your reasoning is that it's fostering and encouraging laziness. I personally have nothing against polls themselves or their implementation. However, if your argument for them is 'People aren't willing to put that much effort into it so FUCK IT why not hold their dick as they piss as well?' To that end...
...Thanks for the shoutout, homeslizzle!
Not to toot my own horn (because I encourage everyone else to keep up with their blogs with almost every blog update I make), output equals input. If you put effort into presenting your ideas and the feedback you would like to hear, you're going to get that effort back, one way or the other, eventually. Hell, my last blog post was announcing a character page I put up and BAM before I knew it, NicoB whipped up some badass recolored facesets for me. I wasn't expecting that! Even then, my recent blog updates usually get around 10-15 on average posts. Why? Not because I'm so great or whatever, it's because I actively engage the readers with discussion, critique, and feedback. Anyone could do it!
If you put in the effort of a dead fish when you want feedback, that's pretty much what you're going to get. Catering to the lowest denominator shouldn't be the basis of your argument, even though I think polls could have a number of useful applications.

If they were going to say something in the first place, they'll probably say it regardless of if there's a poll or not.
And besides that, are you saying you only care about the opinions and feedback of a select few? Yes it's nice to get comments and discussion going, but like I said, it's at most 3-5 people saying something, and it's always the same 3-5 people. I mean, if you're okay with only hearing from a small handful of people, then fine. But I'd personally really like to know what more of my game's players are thinking. I'm willing to bet you're not gonna be able to force even 10% of your game's players to comment on your blog posts.
So personally, I think your idea of "fostering and encouraging laziness" is flawed. You're not gonna force a majority of your players to comment on your blogs, because you can't force a lazy person to become not lazy. And if you don't care about their opinions, fine, then don't use polls in your blogs.
Also, I really don't have time for this. I have my finals in a little over a week, and I really need to study. So it follows that I don't have time to comment on other people's games and whatnot. Look what happened, I made a post discussing my opinion, and now I need to defend it. I've probably wasted over half an hour typing all this up. Honestly, I can appreciate that you want to garner more participation and discussion in the community, but frankly, I just don't have time. I do have time to click a checkpoint and forget about it though. But if that's apparently too lazy for you, my alternative is to take the time to write out my thoughts, or just not say anything at all. Guess what I'm gonna choose. I recall you saying something about suddenly not having time for rpg making anymore with your girlfriend and job so I'm REALLY surprised that this isn't an issue for you.
Anyways, I'm out. I've wasted enough time here. I'm leaving it in WIP's hands as to whether or not he wants to implement polls.
Who said I'm okay with hearing from a small set of people? I'm not catering to one person or group over the other, and nothing I said indicated that at all. Anyone is free to comment on anything that allows them to, and if the same 3-5 people are commenting, that's great, they're regulars. However, by no means are comments RESTRICTED to these people nor are they always the only ones to comment. More and more new faces come in the community all of the time.
I don't want to force anyone to do anything! I'm just saying using the 'WHY BOTHER' argument is a poor mans defense of what you're advocating.
I don't have the time that I used to but it's still a hobby of mines, so I'm still going to put effort towards it!
This is how opinions usually work, bro! If you're not willing to defend your stance there's really no point in stating it!
i figured i'd suss you out sooner or later you rat bastard mow my lawn

Well I'm afraid I'm really not interested in defending my opinions to someone over the internet, since internet arguments universally dwindle into the opposite party picking on whatever minor or stupid flaws the other party has in his or her argument, and no one ever ends up seeing the other person's side. (Seriously have you ever seen me state my opinions on anything? This is why.)
Frankly, I just want an easy way to get a more significant and varied source response for whatever issue or thought I'm currently having. If you think polls are no good, then by all means, suggest some way that I can easily get that kind of mass feedback from a lot of different people.

I've never done a review partially due to my terrible writing skills but polls are something I would be willing to do because they are simple and aren't a hassle like reviews are. But on the other hand a one word answer doesn't really tell the developer much so a 1-2 sentence explanation would seem reasonable.
Sorry, I'm being snappy because I'm really stressed these days.
Anyways, despite everything that's said, I'd still really like to at least try it out and see how it goes. If it ends up discouraging discussion on my game, that's fine. That's a risk I'm willing to take.
So WIP, anything?

We should poll who dislikes this idea so much that they are going to bother fucking arguing about RMN POLS
