Why is it that blog comments are listed from oldest to newest instead of the other way around? It doesn't really make a whole lot of sense having it this way.

It was to make the comments page look consistent with the forums, I believe. There was some debate about this in the past.

Frankly, I do agree with you, but since comments look so similar to the forums I guess it caused some confusion.

I suggested the user option of switching that around, but I'm not sure if that's in the works. But that's probably the best solution.
