Since RMXP can stream sound files as long as they're in mp3 or wma format I want to find a free program that converts wav files to mp3 or wma format. I've tried many different ones but there's always something wrong with them. In Kav's tutorial (http://rpgmaker.net/tutorials/167/) he suggested WavePad Sound Editor, which would be perfect except that it adds about .1 seconds of silence to the beginning and end of the file during conversion, which screws up any samples that are supposed to loop. And I don't want to leave my music samples as wav files, since then the game freezes for a second as it has to load the entire sample before it plays. Does anyone know of any mp3 converters that are good and don't do this?

If you just want to open things up and save them as other filetypes, try Audacity. It's free, and it functions.

dbPowerAmp with the Helix MP3 codec. It supports batch encoding so you can do a bunch of files in a single go, can reencode at different bitrate/kpbs (tip: Never fuck with sampling frequency) and supports DSP effects (which I never use). It is also completely free!

It also supports encoding OGG files which have better quality at lower bitrates compared to MP3 and is supported by RMXP/VX
Switch sound converter is definitely the best free software out there. It's got support for just about every type of sound file there is.

Hmmm, thanks for the suggestions, but I did some research (i.e. wikipedia) and it seems like gaps are inevitable with "lossy" audio formats like mp3 and wma ... It`s a shortcoming of the format. A shame that those are the only steamable formats in RMXP! Has anyone else run into this problem? What must be done? Just use small enough .ogg files that the loading time is reasonable?
I once heard from derula that if you use mp3DirectCut to chop off the ends on the .mp3 files, it won't re-encode it (which is where the gap apparently comes from). I haven't tried it out, but it might be the solution to your problem.

Derula does a lot of work with RM's audio capabilities so maybe you can hit him up. He usually frequents foreign sites, but he does drop by GW once in a while, and he speak english so it shouldn't be any problem to ask him I think.
I have never had that issue and I convert shit from FLAC to NSF to MP3 and there's never been any gaps or issues like that. Have you tried any of the suggested MP3 encoders and checked that the source material doesn't have any gaps?
