HOW TO RESTART

I haven't made any games since 2013. I purchased RMVXAce, but never made any game with it. Sometimes I think about going back to game making, but the doubt that haunts me is this:
What engine to use? I'm mostly worried about compatibility. I'm Always confused about which versions of RM are most compatible with newest Windows versions. Or if newer RM versions also run on other systems. The easiest option for me would be to make a game on RMVXAce, but maybe it's worth it buying the newest RM? Forgot the name... or maybe RM isn't even worth it anymore and I should learn another game engine (especially considering the games I make are not really RPGs)? I'm open to all sorts of opinions.

I think most RMs work on recent systems since Degica(?) has officially released them in English and probably patched them up to work on modern systems.
Other than that I don't have too many suggestions of things. I will always put in a good word for AGS (which is still being updated and most recently when I made a terrible game in it I sort of had to relearn everything... Again :D).
I guess it all depends on how much and what you want to put effort into. And then see what programs best support things you want to do. Gamemaker, various interactive fiction makers and visual novel makers all cater to different needs. (while I guess always also being able to make stuff they weren't meant to)

Click the Windows key, then click the menu button on the bottom left that looks like a power button. That'll give you a menu that includes "restart."
Didn't you make Depression in VX Ace? Really liked that game.
VX Ace is still just fine for games. You can move up to MV if you like, but its had its share of issues as well. There are a lot of topics debating VX Ace versus the newer MV. Here's one of the more recent ones.
At any rate, I'm personally looking at it on a game per game basis. For example, if a game has a lot of pictures or needs parallax mapping or something similar, Ace may be better because MV is supposed to have lag problems with pictures and paralax, or so I've heard.

I'd really just stick to VXAce there's nothing much to gain from MV tbh. The scripting support is best it'll ever get and it just... runs better. The official rm2k and rm2k3 products on degica are actually updated to run better on modern systems with proper upscaling (although I think it uses a weird work around to do it). So technically they don't have the issue you're worried about.
But seriously, just pick up GameMaker.

I've been working on the same RPG Maker 2003 game for 10 years now. Compatibility has been the least of my worries.
In other words, don't worry about who can play your game. If worse comes to worst, you can always show it to other people with a video capture uploaded to Youtube.
Technology will continue to march on and video games take a really long time to make. Technology certainly isn't going to wait for us to finish our games. Just make them as you wanted to.

2k3 has recently (2016?) had its engine updated with a slew of new improvements like picture pointers. it's very highly compatible with modern systems, I believe so is Ace. MV is....... very weird, i had terrible terrible experiences wth it and i run from it like the beast, since none of the several computers i tried to run mv games in gave me an acceptable performance, but then again there are peeps who consistently get 60fps and few bugs so it may be just me.
