ALL JAPANESE RPG CHARACTER ART CONSIDERED ANIME?
Posts
Basically the topic title. Are all Japanese Rpgs character art considered in the same context as Anime, being Anime in itself?
Look at our avatars, and then ask youself that question Tau :)
Not all but probably over 90%. I can't think of one off the top of my head that isn't but I'm sure there are some that aren't anime.
Yeah i think that basically all rpg character art is anime. Games like Valkyrie profiles and tales of symphonia is a good example.
No. The art for Vagrant Story and most of the Final Fantasy concept art is nothing like "anime style".
See I know the Tales series and as of late Star Ocean series but I was just confused on Final Fantasys style of character art.
I think calling all of it anime is over-generalizing, since 'anime-style' is already a vague connotation anyway.
With Final Fantasy though, it's sort of a mixed bag. Look at the original Cloud concept art:

And then look at Kingdom Hearts Cloud:

And lastly Dissidia and Advent Children Cloud:

Ug, all sorts of sizes. I'll fix that later.
Anyway, I post these because I think FF is going the opposite direction from anime. Which is a very good thing, imo.

His hair in the last one looks retarded. Also, I think all of those are pretty anime. Or at least... Japan-ified. (Like the usage of random belts.) Although I don't think the Dissidia ones are anime-ish.
This is very evident in the Suikoden series as YDS pointed out to me:

Looking at these, from earlier games in the series, they are simple and Chinese-styled.
Now look at this:

Change much?
And, basically I think the same thing is happening to the FF series. The earlier games don't really look like any anime at all but as the series progresses it moves towards more of a Japan or anime style.

I'd say that FFVI was a lot more non-anime than FFVII. The FFVI concept art looks like a mix between Franco-Belgian and Japanese comic styles.
I should probably look into why Cloud is so Vincentified in that KH screenshot.

Because the guy responsible (Nomura?) went insane between FF8 and the PS2 and he has a huge belt/zipper fetish which shows off in a whole mess of characters that he's (re)designed since.
I wouldn't consider Japanese Rpg characters Anime since
Anime is a type of animation(cartoon).
But games with Anime clips would count I guess.

JRPG for the most part is pretty synonymous with anime bro, aside from SquareEnix which has really always had tendencies toward a more realist/western style.
There's a Japanese drawing style that's been in manga and animation for a long time, and when video games attained the same level of graphical capability, it could also use the same style. In all media mentioned, there is exceptions and different styles that go outside the traditional style.
Atleast that's my opinion.
