HEY GUYS, WANNA HELP OUT? LET'S TALK.

I feel like making these topics from time to time. I think it's good for the whole community to get together from time to time to have a discussion about the community and site as a whole and discuss where it's going and to discuss what to do.

Today I'd like to talk about how you think you can help RMN as a community. Let's start

Advertise!

By advertise, I don't mean make obnoxious topics all over the Internet saying 'plz bby jion my site plx', but advertising is simply a fancy word for spreading the word about a good thing. No matter how well you have something going, it doesn't matter if nobody knows about it. So how to 'advertise'? There are lots of ways. One is simple, put an image (with the URL of the site encoded) in your sig at other places. This is RMN's official one.

Another way is through the events and promotions we have over here. Our Release/Play Somethings are major draws, and with a skillful topic here, and a clever sig there, people can come all over the Net to see what's up. The final way is simply word of mouth. Got a friend(s) that you think would be interested in game making? Bring 'em here. Bring 'em all here. Our site and our forums kick ass, so there should be something here for everyone.

Post More!

This seems like it would go without saying, but alas, sometimes it has to be said. Don't get me wrong, it isn't really a complaint, I'm actually satisfied with our growing activity. However, I'm still gonna say it. Everyone, post more! Now it's okay if you don't have anything to say, and spamming is no good either. However, a lot of times people say they don't post because they're afraid of getting laughed off the stage, or they feel their opinion isn't worth sharing. Another comment I hear often is that people who just joined don't want to feel as if they don't fit in, so they hesitate.

Don't fear! Fortunately, unless you're just dumb or you go completely against the grain of the rules, anything you have to say is worth listening to by at least half of us. Another thing I notice people do is to wait around the forums waiting for someone else to post before they do. I don't have to state why this can lead to a pretty empty forum if everyone does this. Sometimes it's a good thing to post a topic on what's on your mind; you'd be surprised at the discussion it gets.

Believe it or not you can talk about more than games!

Believe it or not, that's an actual person that made that map you commented on/made the game you rated. We're ALL people. Maybe it's just me (actually, it isn't, so keep reading), but I want to know about the person behind the game/screenshot. What's going on in your life? Break up with your girlfriend? Have a cool story to tell? Got an interesting college class? Wanting to work out/lift and looking for some tips? Make a topic about it! I've noticed that a lot of the posts 'What are you thinking about right now/Awkward questions you've always wanted to ask other members' have some incredible topic potential. Seriously, the next time you post in either of those topics, consider making a topic about it. At the end of the day we're a community, and I want to know about you people too!

Also the General forum needs a lot more love. I mean, I like dicking around in Moronic Stuff as much as the next guy, but think about it.

Discuss.

I'm not saying this to sound arrogant, but I think I'm basically already a model member.

The only thing I don't do that much of is advertise but that's because this site is the extent of my actual interaction with the interwebs (it is the only forum about anything anywhere that I post on), so who would I advertise to? Although some of my friends in life are starting to notice this site because I'm on it all the goddamn time.

If I posted more my fingers would fall off but I definitely agree that OTHER PEOPLE should post more.

This. At least half the posts in moronic are general and maybe vice versa. I personally think the two forums should be merged but I know that's way too drastic for anyone else to agree.

You're one of the most active members on the site. If everyone else were half as active as you are the site would be poppin'. Max is a good example to follow, guys!

NONONONON do not merge the forums. I think there should be less of a grey line of what constitutes a really moronic topic as to what's really general. I think people are more scared of posting a new topic in General because they think it's exclusive for serious topics such as ABORTION: IS IT EVIL???, when really General is a place to relax and talk with your fellow members. Moronic Stuff is there really to be an idiot (nothing with wit dat).

I like the separation between General and Moronic.

Is it just me of did that sound like it was one of those inspirational speeches in some fucken sport movie with the sappy music in the background, etc. A nice post nonetheless. I guess I could try adding something to this forum by posting in General a bit more. Are you sure your all ready for the random shit that pops into my head?
As long as it isn't profoundly retarded or blatantly against the rules, sure, by all means! I wish more people would do it.

HOWEVER

If you're going to make topics, I urge you to make topics that could garner actual discussion. Like I said it doesn't have to be serious, but it should be something that people can respond to with more than a yes/no or something that everyone can add to or relate to.
Half the stuff IN moronic is profoundly retarded! (thank goodness it's just THERE).

There's a problem with encouraging people to post more, but then secretly not WANTING them to.

Just thought i'd give you that observation, from an almost month-old user perspective.

(and some users need to stop complaining to other users about things that they're doing that annoy them but they themselves do constantly!)
I'll start advertising around some of the places i go and i know a few people who are interested in game design so i'll try and bring them over here. As for posting i don't think i need to post more but i have noticed the forum hasn't been as active this week.
I'd like to move this to Site Feedback.

Have you considered affiliating with/advertising at this site? They seem to really, really, really have their shit together. You were probably aware of them the whole time but I just found them and was impressed by the quality level.

I wasn't aware of that site.. I'm already at like 6 Rpgmaker sites so I guess another wouldn't hurt.
Can someone list all the RM RPG sites out there? Preferably with activity level and size.

RMN / Very Active / moderate
GW / Very Active / large
Indie Gaming Portal / Inactive / small
RRR / Very Active / large
RMXP.ORG / Very Active / large
There is also rpgmakervx.net and rmrk.net. They are not quite as active as GW, RMXP.org or RRR but they are fairly large.

Isn't RMN as large as these sites?
Not community wise, no. At least, not yet. They usually have like a hundred guests and 40-50 members at any given time. A lot of people from those places are checking us out, though, so we're growing from community interaction!

Hey Kentona, Is IGP any good as a site?

IGP is basically on hold. The admin is just busy with real life right now. But it was a great site just so you know.
I have a feeling we will be getting lots of members when RMN3 comes out. We will also need to start advertising that when WIP finishes it.
