So I went to the college fair yesterday and even though I am only a Sophmore I have decided to see what school's that interest me in college. Although I have to do more research all and all I have been impressed by two schools that really stood out to me and my goal and career aspire to become a Video Game Programmer and maybe minor in Video Game Design if possible.

Rochester Institute of Technology
They where supposed to be at the fair and they where even listed but there was some problems and they never showed up. What a drag, but ever since Karsuman sent me in the direction of this school, I have become very favorable about it. It offers a well-made 4 year course for a major which I can earn a bachelor degree in while many other schools have this they only have it as a minor or a two year course. Other than that it's top-rank in the Princeton review and clubs and organizations have drawn me to it. It also is only a 4-5 hour trip from my current resident area which means I can visit my parents once a month instead of going off very far and probably only seeing tehm on the holiday. I would live on campus obviously and it just seems like a really good school.

University of Advancing Technology
This was at the fair and I recieved a brochure for this. I like this school alot and I know it'll make me choosing a tough choice later when I am deciding where to go to college. This is located in Arizona meaning I would have to fly there and stay in a dorm, and visitng my parents would be strictly towards major holidays and breaks. They also seem to have an extensive course in Game Design and Programming which really brought me to it. Do you know that it's illegal to have no air-conditioning in Arizona.

I just wanted to share my top schools that I found overall and at the college fair.
As far as getting into VG design goes, you'd be better off going to an actual university and getting a B.Sc in Computer Science. I know there are some universities that offer Bachelors degrees in Information Technology and those programs usually have game design courses. Carleton University, the school I go to, has a B.I.T. program.

The thing about getting a college degree in game design or game programming is that you are pigeonholing your education. A lot of the time in these programs you do not gain sufficeint elective credits in order to gain a backround in anything else.

Also, think about what VG design and VG programming consists of. You'll be staring at the computer for hours a day, and your colleagues will mostly be smelly nerds like yourself. I wouldn't think that there are an awful lot of GIRLS around the offices of the VG developer except maybe a hot sister or a cool receptionist or two.

VG design is very much an entertainment field, so what that means is that job security is definetly not the worst but far from stable.

These are the reasons why I didn't go into game design, but if you've got your heart set on it you might as well make it worth your while and get your Bachelor's degree, I think.
