I have shared my story plot with people in the past and I have to ask about this to you guys to see if you agree with how I view this.
The main villain of my game was at one time a hero, now after saving the world he only wants to have a simple life on his land with his wife.
Now if you did all this good shit and a village of people kill your wife because they do not agree with the mixed race relationship (The wife was a elf).
Burning your house down with you inside after all is settled you have lived through the fire but scarred would all that be cause for you to go insane and try to get revenge or change what had happen?

I would find it hard to believe the village people would kill his wife if this guy was a world renown hero. While they would bear so grudge against the relationship, to go all the way to kill the wife...
But you could go on this route by making 1 of the village people really racist, like beyond what the other village people find acceptable. Then this guy kills the wife. The hero then blames the entire village for this death. And because the hero is so powerful he kills everyone in the village, even the ones who supported his marriage.
One of the survivors of the village is actually one of the people who stood up for the hero. And he was saved by the hero. So it becomes a struggle for him to go against the guy who he admired so much.
This is how you great conflict within the characters.
Do they know he's the hero? If they did, no this scenario wouldn't make a great deal of sense, but if he saved the world and truly wanted a quiet life to settle down I could see him moving to a remote area where the big problems of the world have less impact. Somewhere far removed from the battlefield or the site of the traumatic cataclysm. It would also stop him being noticed and bothered if a simple quiet existence was all he wanted.
If that is the case then there is also a chance he moved to an area that is less bohemian in their outlook and set in their ways and the mixing of races makes them uncomfortable. I don't know if they'd go so far as to actually kill the wife (especially if this guy is tough and he'd need to be), though I imagine snide comments and refusal of service and other bigoted responses would be normal. Especially if elves are traditionally viewed with suspicion or distrust in this world to begin with, their aloofness, their longevity, their magic, there are plenty of reasons for them to be disliked or at least not trusted by the 'common' folk.
I think that if a roaming band of bandits or the like came through the village whilst he was away the villagers wouldn't have gone to her aid as they would have for a human woman. If so he could then hold them responsible for not helping her, or indeed him when he returned home to find it ablaze and he raced inside to unsuccessfully rescue her (thereby getting his burns).
Depending on how badly he was disfigured and if he suffered any other injuries he could use that as an excuse for revenge that then spirals out of control. Human beings have done worse to each other in the real world.
Truly sympathetic villains are a tough nut to crack, but I appreciate the fact you are wanting to create someone who is more than one dimensional or powered solely by standard RTP tropes (evil twin/long lost brother types).
Edit: Kory's idea isn't a bad one, but you'd need to add to it by having everyone know who did it and refusing to hand the perpetrator over to the 'hero' for summary justice,(i.e at the end of a sword). They could insist on a trial at which the murderer gets off and that is what drives the hero over the edge. That he put his faith in 'the system' and if failed to protect or avenge the love of his life.

I think you should expand on what the former hero does after getting revenge on the villagers he blamed for his wife's death - maybe he goes through a series of amoral decision for the sole purpose of getting his wife back. Also, think about why the protagonist of all people needs to stop his plans and it's not something anyone else would have done. A world domination/destruction plot would just kill the protag's involvement with the plot as basically everyone would have done the same.
I think with the ex-hero killing most of the village, but leaving some survivors. Then one of the survivors has a reason to get revenge.
Also you need to show some sort of spiral down of the ex-hero. He's going to do something drastic and needs to be stopped. You don't need it to be a global crisis. This can be a personal battle between the ex-hero and the person trying to get revenge.
