BACKGROUND NOISE

What do you play in the background while you're working on projects?Sports?Sitcom reruns?I personally like to listen to the Drunken Peasants podcast while I'm working sometimes, also Welcome to Night Vale.

As a person who makes music I prefer spending most of the time outside composing in silence. And most of the times if I do start to listen to some music, I just start analyzing it. .-.

If it has too much talking, I get distracted. Sometimes I will play inspirational music relevant to the game's atmosphere. A favourite of mine is the Social Network soundtrack, especially this track:

Although more often than not I forget to play music. Generally it helps me concentrate, but sometimes I feel like I need silence instead.
A MIDI I have in my project folder and put it on repeat until I need to test my game or get bored of listening to it.
I like background music. I could never listen to recordings, voices or shows, however.
It's one of the many reasons I prefer chatting over voicechat, because I can't focus on anything else but that. Unless I want to hear only 0-1% of what is said.

I do prefer instrumental, especially god is an astronaut.

Game soundtracks are lovely to listen to as well - like shadow of the colossus, nier, the persona osts or anything of the sort.
I particularily like the Child of Light, Nier and Transistor soundtrack.
Shadow of the Colossus is magnificent as well, but at times annoying.

But I also listen to my old favorites from time to time, like Porcupine Tree. As long as it's calm or relaxing it's fine. Hell, even Zen music can do.
Classical music actually is nice as background music as well, although I rarely if ever do that.

I've listened to this a lot while I was pixelling.

I generally listen to Prog Rock/Krautrock or some Ambient Electronic nonsense when I want to really work in a total trance. Some of my favourites are:

However, if I were to pick my absolute favourite for inspriation and "meditation" it would be Klaus Schulze's Andromeda Strain:

I also have an iTunes full to the brim with video game soundtracks, and have several playlists specific to certain games I might be working on. I used to snatch a lot of soundtracks off of YouTube, but now sometimes I have to listen to them on YT because I don't have a playlist downloader anymore. If anyone can recommend me a good tool to download & convert entire YT playlists in one go, I'd be greatful.

Other than that I might listen to some Game Grumps, JonTron era, if I don't want to be in as big of a trance while working.

You joyless lot. I hope you can one day find the sense of wonder and enthusiasm you have lost by professionally pursuing exciting careers in sound technology.

For everybody that can listen to music normally, I'd like to recommend "Accuradio." It's the only internet music service besides Spotify that I can get to work in my region, but it has plenty of stations for work and productivity and three more for every other possible genre. I rarely use Youtube unless I want a specific song which I don't find worth downloading.

Well I do still listen music for enjoyment as well, it's just more active listening than having it on the background.

I still enjoy the atmosphere and emotions that all different music deliver, it's just that usually you end up getting so inspired in the process that you want to get back to work yourself.

I find it also easier to appreciate all different nuances, details and patterns of all different music genres and songs after becoming a student in music.

And artists like Maxo especially blow my mind with their sound manipulation abilities: https://soundcloud.com/maxoelectronic

Eh, I've been seriously playing guitar for about twelve years now, and I find that I can turn off my critical ear unless something catches my attention, at which point it's kind of okay to take a half-minute break to think about music.

I used to have an enormous new wave playlist on Grooveshark; I'm slowly rebuilding it on Spotify. I've also recently gotten into listening to podcasts when I draw.
I tend to have tv shows on in the background - sometimes they'll even help spark an idea or two. I don't like having just silence.

If I'm in hard-gammak mode I instead have music on - instrumental only. I find words disrupts the flow and it can be hard to concentrate fully on a task if you've half an ear listening to someone talking about the latest in a string of mysterious murders or something like that. Usually VG music because that shit is the bomb and if the right track comes on I find myself grinning like a loon, bopping away to the song while I'm working away. It adds to the fun facto. ^.^
