FATHER: MONSTER MAKING EVENT
Posts
Hello RMN. For those of you who are interested in Father, thanks for showing your support. I really appreciate it. Today, I have a mini event that will be taking place. Here are the details:
Example enemies:

Mr. Fowl

Scaredy Cat
Info: Father encompasses an era where human influence has become very strong on wild life and insect life. The main reason for this is GOODY Corp, an unethical corporation, that will do ANYTHING to progress. Thus, wild life has suffered from their continuous forced natural selection, chemical emissions, and overall human influence. So, the monsters should be based off of real animals. That's the cutting point. I guess it is in a way like Mother 3 but the choices you can make are endless.
Running Time: Until Development Finishes.
Objective: Father isn't using Mother 3 enemies any more. I kinda found that to be quite tacky. Thus, I am beginning to create my own monsters for the game. The monsters are going to be influenced by the world. Essentially, the world is corrupting the wild life and upsetting the balance between humans and animals/insects. So... anything goes!
Rules/Conditions
A.) All participants must send me a submission form to be considered.
Here's a downloadable version that you can send me: http://rpgmaker.net/users/Ljink/locker/FATHER_MONSTER_SUBMISSON_FORM.docx
You can also view the information and fill the form out on the Monster Maker Page.
B.) You may submit any number of monsters you want. You can send the sketches via PM or post it on this blog.
C.) Monsters must not use any strong sexual references. I know Crack Cocanine is going a bit far but there's not crack on the dog to be seen. In other words, I don't wanna see bananas, cherrys, or anything of the sort. Unless they are properly clothed.
D.)You must send it as a PNG file!!!
I will not accept any jpg, bmp, or any other file formats. Naturally, cameras take jpegs but you can find numerous raster based programs that allow you to export to PNG.
*REMINDER* The maximum monster size is 128x128 Pixels. That isn't the maximum file size but the monsters will be made in a 128x128 all the way down to a 16x16.
My only hope is that you have fun with this and you'll be able to see your monster in Father when it is released. Until then, you can try out a demo of the game that encompasses what it might be like.
The only incentive for you to participate is that you'll be noted in the credits and you'll be aiding in the creation of Father. I'm not asking that you do picasso work here. Just a sketch that you would make in your notes or something. I have plenty of ideas, I just thought it would be cool if enemies from RMN were on here. But I guess I'm not that popular to run such an event.
Example Submission:

1.) Name: Crack Cocanine
2.) Monster Attack Phrase: The Crack Cocanine tried using peer pressure...
3.) Monster Stats

What is the game about, story-wise? I think that would help with people who want to come up with ideas.

As far as character story progression, I am currently working on a story that reflects the changes being made to the game.
Why should I want to design monsters for nothing in return? The monster concept idea of corrupted nature is literally 100% the concept of Mother 3 enemies, so why not just use them? Everything else in the game is ripped anyways.
Normally I'm very supportive of going custom, but it seems like you're doing this to try and skirt the edge of having your game called a Mother knockoff.
idk maybe im a dick

True, corrupted nature is a concept but it doesn't necessarily belong to a certain series. That's like saying Man vs. Beast belongs to Moby Dick.
I know most of the game's graphics are rips, some are custom edits from designers that work on Pokemon hacks that I have gotten permission to use as long as I credit them. I'm not top notch game developer. I don't have much to offer. I just thought this would be a fun event for people to participate in and overall, just a fun game for the community to play.
I also go lightly on Fangame as of now. The game started off as a Mother fan game but it just didn't want to go that route. It is simply inspired by it and many other games. Character rips, unless they're important NPCs, shouldn't be that big of a deal and form the feedback I'm getting, it isn't. It's the important characters that matter. That's why I won't be using Mother 3 enemies because you can recognize them. Once again, as for the graphics, I can't really just go off on a tangent and make my own. I'm not trying to impress anyone with my graphical skill but rather I want a solid game to be enjoyed by all different kinds of people.
I posted this on Starmen and Dragon Quest den and they're all for it. I understand, well mostly I don't understand, but I will try to understand the frustration behind your thinking. If you don't want to design monsters, then don't. I didn't force anyone to. I just thought it would be fun. I'm doing most of them, I just thought, hey why not let RMN make a few monsters. I don't see what the deal is with that. I guess knockoff would be a more fitting description. And to be honest, I'm not bothered by that. I just want to make a decent game and sometimes the money and resources aren't there to go fully custom. And this is an indie, pre made game engine, that this game is running on. There's only so much I can do.
Well, my point wasn't to say there was anything wrong with what you're doing. If there are people out there that want to participate then that's cool I guess. I'm just confused, slightly annoyed and find it weird I guess. Maybe it's because I'm drop dead tired, have been on planes all day and have been eating trashy food and been dehydrated.
idk maybe im a dick

Pizza is right though, the game is a bunch of rips compiled into a game at this point it wouldn't be unjust to not make your own enemies and it's not even a contest seeing it's basically he'll take it if he likes it.

What do you suggest I do then? A poll? I've already changed it to "Event". I'm a very easy going guy so I don't understand the stigma that's being evoked towards me. I find that even if the game is just rips, it shouldn't deduct from the actual game you'll play. Like...I've already stated that I'm no great spriter or anything. Given those circumstances, what is it that you all want me to do? Some say it's fine, others are so polar about it. My mind tells me to ignore but I can't ignore it, obviously it's an issue. But it is an issue that quite frankly, I can't help.
Yeah, I'll say it's a knockoff. But are graphics that important to you all? If you guys don't like the concept that much why do you continue to post on it? You don't have to be involved. It's kinda frustrating me. I can take criticism but this game isn't something that is supposed to be fully custom. Once again, I just thought it would be fun to do an event like this. I don't want to be biased, what do you suggest then?
The thing is nobody does something for nothing. It's different for a site-hosted event as they get the nod from staff and usually have some sort of compensation, be it MS, a steam game or just a badge (and being able to brag) but tagging something as an event doesn't change the fact that you'll be getting peoples' ideas and work for nothing.
Some people won't mind. Some people will. The fact of the matter is this - less people are likely to want to put their ideas into something that isn't 100% original, especially if you're already using rips of a game and could use more rips to fix the issue.
If you're hurting for monster ideas you could just take those monster ideas from Earthbound and slam 'em together. Or take a look at any list of generic RPG monsters and make puns of them like the Earthbound team did.
Quite frankly, no-one knows your game or you, so they won't feel inclined to help for no reason.

Personally I'm pretty eeehh on the whole "should people use rips from big name games" issue, but I will admit to being salty that you're asking people asking for free resources while only offering ~experience~ or ~your name in the credits~.
Like, at the end of the day, if people wanna give you free stuff because they feel like it, that's their prerogative, I guess, but like... idk if you want original resources, maybe pay someone for them. And maybe keep the asking for resources to resource request forums or your own gamepage.

This. I'll move this thread to the resource section where it belongs and maybe make a blog post on your game page where fans of the game can see and respond. You're bound to get more people who are genuinely interested in your game and the plight there-of there. With over 2000 games on the site, yours currently isn't well known enough for the majority of people in the forums to care and you're not well-known enough to pull off an event like this with a positive vibe.
Those who would, would have at least one well-known game under their belts - probably being featured on the front page and actually offering something.

Just close the thread. Do something to it. People are being rude. I'm not HURTING for enemies. I just thought it would be cool for everyone to take part in some monster creation, talent or no talent. I really just thought this up real quick after the first 2 enemies. Why the hate? A soft, "no" would suffice. I get it, people don't wanna work for free. Even something as simple as this:

a simple thing. Uploaded in seconds. Just forget it. You don't finish one game... just forget I said anything. It pains me to read this. Please, just close it.

Okay, I get it. I'm not well known. Do you have to rub it in?
I don't think she's rubbing it in. Nor do I think she's saying all this as some slight against you. She's saying that once you show the world that you can complete a game and that you have the dedication to make something like this work, then making an event like this will go a lot smoother.
I'm not making any judgement on you one way or the other, but I think you should try to relax and not let this bother you so much. People are just posting their opinions. It's not worth getting this upset about.
Your game looks good and I wish you the best with it ^_^

But like, isn't once said enough? I guess you're right, don't let it bother me. I respect everyone here and their opinions but there's only so much I can take...especially with life being relentless. This game is being made to help me cope with being forced to live with relatives that hate me, it just kinda hurts all together but I can't let emotions get the best of me. I get it, Dragon Quest first. Thanks.
The reason I reiterate a point is because I have the memory of a goldfish and can't be bothered to check my previous post when writing something up. Also, because I've met a lot of people who just read half a post and ignore what they don't want to hear (it happens more than you think) so I've trained myself to point things out more than once when it's a pertinent point. Oh, and expanding on it a bit more is another thing I've been trained to do. >.<;
Also, people aren't deliberately being rude to you. Could they be gentler in saying their opinion? Probably. Should they change how they react to everyone and everything - change who they are - because some people are more easily affected by tone and words used? I don't think so, but that's their choice. Don't take things so much to heart or as an insult against yourself, okay?
Don't give up on the 'dream' - ask on your game page and you will be more likely to get people wanting to help than here in the forums. The people there know you and your game and are more likely to want to help since they're fans.
Sorry if this didn't turn out the way you wanted but sometimes things don't. Just pick yourself up, dust yourself off and continue working on it. >.<)b

Yeah, Okay. People think I'm tough but inside, I'm just a big softee so sometimes emotions get the best of me. I understand the logic going on here. Can't just walk into Nintendo demanding a job with no credentials. I just got here a few years ago, didn't know the site was so big.
You're taking this a little too hard. Try to find a solution instead of beating yourself over it or taking what people are saying as personal attacks.
To start off, try getting the community a bit more involved with the submissions they make. Rather than just having people submit some crazy monster and call it a day, get people to design it and come up with a concept, like a high defense, low offense status user based off a skunk, or a flea that uses a unique skill to boost speed every turn... Something more specific. That way, it will at least feel like the participants are doing something meaningful with their submissions rather than handing out free work.
You also need to set up a clear premise for your project. I actually checked the project page before making my post in this thread, and even then it didn't seem like the game had a clear idea as to what it's about other than being based off Mother 3. That also decreases the incentive for anyone to submit an idea.
http://rpgmaker.net/events/pokemon_rmn/
This is what I did with the Pokemon RMN Event, if it helps you out (I did make some mistakes). At the time I made this I had no idea how the plot of the game was going to carry out (the submissions actually helped formulate it), but still, I established the basic premise of "Kid trainer going to a brand new region filled with exotic Pokemon", and broke down in exact detail as to what I was looking for with each submission, going as far as to provide points of reference to those unfamiliar with the mechanics of the game. That way, people won't have to guess as much as to what they should submit, and it overall makes their efforts feel more rewarding.
By the way, I disagree that there is no reward to these types of events. The reward is that you get to see your awesome idea implemented into a potentially great game. Considering that we are a community of developers, however, that reward would feel even more satisfying if the submissions were expanded to allow contestants to design their submissions around your game, as already stated.
