ALLOW US MEMBERS TO VOTE FOR GAMES WEEKLY/MONTHLY/DAILY(SOLVED?)

Posts

Mods and admins being able to choose them is cool and all, but why can't users vote for them to earn monthly/weekly/whatever awards?

Maybe the devs, playtesters, and such could get some points or something cool added if their game wins.

As for daily: How about a spotlight? Maybe a new game someone hasn't seen?

the users who play the games know more than the admins and mods do..and it ain't like all the staff have the time in the world to playtest or beat these games.

Edit: There's already many ways of nominating games that I did not know existed.
Uh, I'll run counter-arguement. All it takes is one person with a lot of friends to put forward a shitty game and it to get front page. And then the Fire Nation attacks and hell reigns in the forums, the game pages and just in general. It's not pretty.

That said, I do believe we take suggestions (we do have some stickied topics for that, right?) as to what you guys think deserve certain front page spots and we then vet them to make sure they ain't shit. Well, not that we really need to do that since members are all to ready to point out a game that doesn't 'deserve' the 'honour' of being on the 'oh so holy' front page.

The same thing could be said about staff being biased toward a game a friend made which doesn't matter of what quality. I am only counter arguing because I have seen people on forums and stuff with bad mods and admins just resort to doing this. It is very bad and shady...

I'm not saying staff here do it, per se, but I've ran into people who would do it even with staff power. How about a one account per IP address or something could vote? I dunno, this was just an idea. I highly doubt people here would resort to voting for shitty games
Yeah, no-one would ever rig a vote... (I am definitely not looking at some past Misoas at all, nope!)

It's not likely to occur because frankly, the system we have in place right now is pretty okay.

1 - people can already put forward the games they think should be added.
2 - we'd have to free up a staff member to take care of the vote each month - set it up and remind people to vote
3 - voting isn't something that RMN members do much of when they do occur. I can't imagine a monthly/weekly/daily vote being popular past the first few times - we've seen it quite a bit. I mean, if the Misaos have to be drummed up ages in advance just to get a decent selection of voters, then something like this would... yeah...
4 - As it stands most games put forward are fine. RMN has run like this for quite a while - the people in charge of this are trusted not to be biased because they've proven not to be biased. It's a no-brainer not to fix what isn't broken.
5 - it's unnecessary. Anyone can suggest a game in the relevant topics.
6 - those spots are for games that look promising, that people are pumped for or are interesting. They aren't for popularity votes. That's the Misaos. That's the end of the year.
7 - IP addresses... don't get me started on that okay? XD It's hard enough keeping bots and double accounters* in line without adding extra incentive for them to do that shit.
8 - There are shit games that look good but aren't great or up to the standards of play that some of these spots require. Not only would putting one of these games up start a war, but the chances of such a game going up would be high. A lot of people on RMN don't have time to play the games. They gauge by eye-candy, even though as developers they know that looking good != being good. Still they fall for the pretty. All we need is one shitty game in pretty wrapping to make it through and World War III would be on. We do not need that kind of shit and it's more likely to occur with voting.

*Duplicate accounts are already against site rules but it doesn't stop some from doing this even when they know it leads to a ban for both accounts and any that we find there-after. Seriously, we don't need to encourage that. Ever. >.<

Also, I think we went like six months without a single person posting in the POTM topic.

Wow, GG.

Well, I didn't know these existed cause I'm still slightly new and don't really use the forums too much.

The admin staff here is probably the least power-hungry people I have ever come across in a internet community. And that really says and means a lot.

They don't form little cliques and shove others away, and with game-making we all take notice to a admin making a game, so if it's shitty(which would be hard to believe) it would get called out on, and yadayadayada a lot of other stuff that would never happen would happen.

I say give us less power, if anything. Any more power would get abused in a hobby where people want to become super popular or have a game shine above all others.

Don't fix what ain't broke is somethin' my momma always used ta' say.

I'm pretty amazed by this since many Internet forums seem to -always- have a power hungry staff member or more.

I guess being around for 7 years on the net is a big honor too, and I've not even heard of it back then.. D; I wasn't even into RPGs, let alone making RPGs, etc.

I also didn't realize a popularity contest would/could ensue from this if there were more power to be able to vote for games of the week, month, whatever.

All in all, I guess this suggestion can be jossed for now.
I just hide my ravenous ambitions for power better than most.

The trick is to not have any friends.

Also, if anything, I use my power to showcase my own games as a threat if you guys DON'T suggest games, pictures, devspots or whatever. You can go through some of the history of those threads to see those threats, like "Fuck guys, I am going to feature Hero's Realm ALL THE TIME if you don't suggest something. it's been weeks since the last suggestion etc etc.."

Fortunately, I also happen to be an okay game developer with a large library of games.

If anything, you're an inspiration to amateur developers to get their game known and on the front page.
Well placed threats, sir.

Yeah, but most staff members earn the position as they started off as regular members. They could still have friends, sadly who'd do this for them. :/

Yes, I do agree the goal is to not be buddy to buddy with someone too much. I've been wanting to make an RPG for months, but I am pretty bad at staying motivated and I'm really a really bad procrastinator.

If I ever do make an RPG and feature it here, I'd likely break that habit..
one day I will make the frontpage ALL KENTONA, ALL THE TIME...\

e: also, I started out as a regular member.
As the newest mod (I think - am I the newest? I need to double check that >.<;) I'll admit that I have friends that aren't staff members. It's what you get for being around on a community for a long (or even a short) time. The thing is, if something isn't up to standards for the site or for promotion on the front page, I wouldn't accept it and I certainly wouldn't put it forward as promotion worthy if it.

Why?

Firstly, because I have high standards. Friends come to me to ask me to tear their shit to pieces - as a good friend who wanted their pals to get better would do. No enabling.

Secondly, because that's a fast way to lose my spot - and not because kentona would throw me down but because the people on the site would tear me a new one. The majority of them know me well enough that they'd have no issue snarking at me if I made that mistake.

Thirdly, it's not something I personally bother with unless asked about it. (Though I should probably now that I'm helping with submissions, I guess.) And I don't have the ability to change anything on the front page. Only two people have that power and one of them led a coup to take over the site (kinda not really XD) and the other led the submission queue for well over a year with little issue. Both are highly trusted in the community and in RMN in particular. (Captain, my captain! o7 )

Fourth - most people don't seem to care too much what goes on the front page as long as it looks interesting and is of decent quality. (Oh, I still remember the Legendary Legend fiasco.) And if it isn't, well...

And lastly? Because it's very stupid to do. This community is very outspoken and it's something we encourage. See something wrong? Let us know. We'll take a look. Because of this outspokenness, if there were any personal preference toward friends over other people there would be very, very loud shouts of favouritism. And people around here get pretty scary if they think things aren't fair for everyone, so... yeah.

It is good that you're thinking about ways to improve the site, though. Don't take my arguments as dismissal of your efforts in that respect. I'm looking forward to seeing what other ideas you come up with and whether we'll be able to pick your brain for things that will enhance the site. We only got this far thanks to people suggesting things - and that is what has kept us ahead of other sites; allowing our members to have a say in what we do with the site.

This is a cool thread. It reminds me how cool this community is. Cheers, RMN!

Yes, been here like a month or so...and I like it so far.

Well, he's the boss now, but initially we were run by WIP (who actually created the site) who handed it off to kentona after he could no more provide hands-on support - time issues and inclination.

Yeah, I didn't know anything about this sites history or knew it was painless to create RPGs til I heard about RPG Maker a few years back.

I just registered to become a user to follow World's Dawn closely, along with just now finding games I wanna play that are complete or not quite out yet.

Lucky enough someone was kind enough to get me an RPG Maker VX Ace copy while steam had it on sale.
Yeah, I didn't know anything about this sites history

Someone should write an article that explains that history
