RMN LOADING TIMES
Posts
Is it just me or have the sites loading time been getting longer and longer lately?
I don't think it's on my end, since all other site I regularly visit haven't changed.
Anyone know what's causing this? Or am I wrong?

Our best hypothesis is that it's Pom's fault. All those downloads, all that traffic... the site is still recovering. It's been laggy since the Pom incident, in any case.
It's always been slow to load initially for me. Just accessing the site takes 10-20 seconds at first, but once I'm "in" I browse with minimal lag.

Sometimes I get the "site loads slow the first time but fast once I'm in" also, but lately it's more than that.
This topic took 7 minutes to load for me just now. Had to reload 5 times because it kept timing out.
Edit: This post took over a minute to send after hitting the post button.

My lag is just a few seconds most of the time. Sometimes things are instant, and sometimes they take up to a minute.
Funny, I thought it was just me because of my router.

I find it a little slow every now and then, but I always just assumed that it was because of the site being privately hosted. Then again, I know shit all about computers.
Site's written in Python. Python's not designed to make websites unless some very specific framework (read bloat) is applied, like django used here.
It would be better off using PHP, ASP or some language designed specifically to make dynamic websites, even java server pages would be ok. It would take time to rewrite whole thing, but performance would only get better because of it.
//edit: Two minutes. It was sending simple TEXT (MIME: text/plain) message for two minutes. On 20 mbit ADSL connection.
By the way, changing language or even switching to off-the-shelf solution like vBulletin would lower hosting costs as PHP/ASP hosting is dirty cheap.
//edit #2: At least add some sort of spinner and big "Loading" text when user click on the link, so he/she/it will know that SOMETHING is going on. Even newspapers have those nowadays.

See?

Rave, your ideas are not feasible, but feel free to rewrite the site in your spare time, for free, in a timely manner.
I know the site is slow. I'm looking into what I can do to optimize it better.

Just as an FYI, we used 6 Terabytes of bandwidth this month, and 37 Terabytes of bandwidth for the year. 'Cheap' hosting wouldn't cut it.
Also, some of the largest websites on the WWW are run on Python (hello Reddit and YouTube).
We are actively working on the speed issue though...

Yeeeeah, I'm pretty sure the slowdowns are caused by a ton of people downloading 300MB games at the same time, not by the server taking two and a half minutes to evaluate the Python code that makes the "Quote" and "Edit" buttons work in the forum (although those buttons do take a suspiciously long time to work after you push them, even when the site is running at full speed).

Wait, my newspaper has a loading spinner? I've never seen it do that before...
That's...
...NEWS...
...to me...

I would, but I can't without access to current sources if you want site to behave like current one.
//edit: @ankylo: And Wikipedia and Facebook runs on PHP. Your point?
@slashphoenix: It just load so fast that you don't even notice it ;).
//edit #2: Also I'd gladly appreciate you to stop putting things I said in my "user title", dear admins. Please also clear current one. Thanks.

The point is that other sites with extremely high volume run on the same framework as ours, making your argument that "Python sucks!" completely moot.
Am I the only one currently missing the RMN logos at the top of the page and on the black bar? >.<;
I figure it's because of loading since they disappeared after a did a reload of a page. Just... vanished along with the Christmas decorations.

Excuses excuses.
And one does not choose a user title - a user title chooses you.

Now I actually feel kind of bad that I could have played a small part in breaking the site. I just recently downloaded a game the other day that was around 300 MB’s, lol. So, yeah, I apologize for that. :D
But, back to the main issue at hand, I do experience the odd slowdown here or there but it usually doesn’t take too long (about 20-30 seconds at worse).
It may not be the perfect setup, but she still runs just fine for me. I realise that Kentona and ankylo can only do so much and that we should try to be as patient as possible whenever it comes to dealing with these types of site issues. Lord knows that I couldn't do it.
I'd say I've been pretty darn patient, I've wanted to make this thread for maybe a month, but I decided to wait and see if it got better. It didn't.
As long as something is being done to make it better I guess I won't complain, though

I'm not sure how relevant this is to the topic, as it could be on my end, but the last three (four?) times I tried to upload a game to the site, I get a "Server not responding" error after about five minutes. Though, I'm not really sure about the timing, as I try to occupy myself with other stuff. I'm kinda wondering if it's not somehow related, but I don't know a damn thing about this kinda stuff.

Marrend, that's completely normal, that has happened to me from five different computers at five different IP addresses in three different cities, almost every time I've tried to upload a game. The connection just times out. But it eventually works if I keep retrying it.
My personal theory is that it happens when the connection hangs and no data gets sent for a minute or two, so the ISP terminates the connection. Which means if I keep visiting other pages on RMN as it's uploading, the connection will stay active. Maybe.
