GAME IDEAS

I would like to propose a "game ideas" category, unless there is already a category in which these would go into (still getting used to the site).
How it would work: Each post would have to consist of an idea for one game, and it would have to have at least some substance to it (About 1-2 paragraphs) describing how the game would go, in order to filter out junk suggestions.
Why it's needed: Because there are many people out there with striking, brilliant, and original ideas for games. Yet many of these people do not have the skills or the time to develop these games. At the same time, we are experiencing a good amount of boring, generic games being posted. This is the result of a "skillset mismatch" of sorts. If people could post creative ideas for games in a category, never again would a developer need to fret over ideas for a game. As and end result, we would most likely see better games coming out of rpgmaker.net, something I'm sure we all want.
That's basically it. Sure it's different, but I really think it could work out good as well.

Hmm, sound good. But isn't that what the "What are you thinking about?" and "Whatchu workin' on?" threads are basically for?
People kinda do this anyways in the forums, posting their game ideas. And it's rare(not impossible) that people are going to want to use someone's idea instead of thinking of a game for themselves.
This seems more helpful to people who really need help making their entire game...but I guess it wouldn't hurt.

having ideas isn't anything special. if you want a topic full of people getting all self-important because they can toss out some unrealistic scenarios they have no plans of ever implementing themselves, go right ahead, but I won't be participating.
you know why all these games are boring and generic? because I'm gonna tell you a secret right now, so keep your ears peeled. the secret is that every single one of these game devs has a whole slew of ideas just like you do, and they're all hyped up on how amazing they'll be when they're put to use.
the secret is that at their core, these ideas they're so in love with are ridiculous, poorly planned, impossible to execute, or simply so trifling or minute that their presence can't be felt in the final product. the secret is that the few that are workable are compromised by either their own poor execution or the sheer weight of terrible ideas keeping the one or two good ones from showing their potential.
the secret is that slapping together a hundred ideas you think are cool on their own often just results in an aimless, meandering everything-game that's a complete chore to play.
the secret is that if you're good at what you do, you can make the most idea-less work fun, engaging, and thought-provoking.
ideas aren't anything. don't let them romance you.
I'm not saying this can't happen for any reason, but it's a common and disastrous amateur mistake to put ideas on a pedestal. done poorly, this topic could hamstring otherwise promising startup devs by impressing them with the false idea that ideas themselves are a precious commodity that greatly affect the quality of a game.

I actually like this idea (hurr) and have been meaning to make a topic like this for a long time now... I just keep forgetting. Why? Because another person might be inspired by an idea that someone else throws out there. Of course, it would be best as a single thread dedicated to JUST ideas.
HOWEVER! Keep those ideas for a little while, because something is coming on the 10th.

if it's going to happen, then yeah, it absolutely has to happen as a single thread. there isn't a whole lot to discuss about the kinds of ideas these people usually come up with, and at one or two paragraphs each individual topics would flood whatever place you made for them.

Yeah, in hindsight its probably better to have a single thread instead of an entire topic. Never really though it would make it as an independent topic anyway, just wasn't sure exactly where to put it. There should probably some sort of format that should be followed, so that people don't flood the thread with unrealistic, crazy ideas.

Mawk, I understand where you're coming from with the flood of unfeasible ideas. Ask pretty much anybody you know for an idea, and they will most likely have one for you. However! As an idealist, I do value ideas that have had a fair amount of thought put into them, and believe that ideas themselves can make a big difference. Just look at Philosophy, a science based purely upon ideas. Yes, many try to discredit it as a psuedo-science, but Philosophy has contributed to all of our ideas that we have today. Concepts such as morality, liberty, due process, logic, and even science itself (deduced from natrual philosophy) all came from the study of ideas. So yes, I do believe ideas are something. Anyway, sorry to go off on a tangent like that.
Another thing is that looking at game ideas can often give you ideas to include in your own game. (A new point of view, mechanics, ect.) As sometimes there are very few games out there similar to yours, it can't hurt to look at similar ideas if there aren't enough games you can look at. Looking forward to whatever's "coming on the 10th"
