can we please

...and then replace it with the GD&D forum having latest screenshots and the pic of the moment at the top, like how recent design blogs are posted in GD&T?

We can then merge the "thinking about"/"working on" thread with "Watchu Got Goin' On?", which can be the catch-all "help I don't know how to improve this map" or hey I just whipped up a cool script" or "just finished this character bio, watchu think?" thread for people who don't have blog-worthy stuff going on. We really don't need two threads for this, and important things/completed screenshots should be put on game profiles!

I look in the screenshot thread maybe once a month. It seems popular, though.

I agree, if only because 3 of the 4 pinned topics are interchangeable (the non-screenshot ones have plenty of screenshots too). I think we need at least one topic for spouting random one-liners and nonsense that doesn't necessitate an entire blog post (or for asking for help), but right now we have 3 and I get them mixed up a lot :P

I like this! I need more reasons to see more games! Anything that links members with their current projects. It's fun to see more about all your personalities and ideas through your posts AND games
I like the Screenshot thread and visit it every time it's updated, to see what's going on. It's very helpful for people who need help or are just looking for some opinions on their maps, but don't want to post those pictures on their game pages quite yet. Or for people to post maps that aren't part of games - just practice.
People have been good about not fighting or flaming (which is why it initially got the boot) so I see no reason why it should be closed.

I will say that I like the idea about integrating the game pages into the forums a bit more~

Liberty, I expressed a way to deal with that need within my post!
Liberty, he's suggesting that the screeshot topic be eliminated so that there is ONE central what are you doing topic. So, there'd still be a place for the screenshots, it'd just be mixed in with the other things that need opinions.

So, yeah, I like this idea.

Edit: Nevermind, Craze answered you!
Ah, I missed that part. XP
sounds good to me. i wanted to redesign the dev portal anyway.

Mmh, I don't know... I agree with almost everything except for axing completely the screenshot topic. I'm very critical of the visual aspect of games so even if I don't post anything I'm always checking it and I'm glad that there's a dedicated thread for that. Mixing it with the other topics will result in a faster moving thread with even fewer screens and I don't quite like the idea. =/

I think is healthy to keep just two threads, one for screen/videos that are easier to digest, and another one for general game-dev musings.

Edit: Actually I like the idea of a more integrated Game art topic. I always resented a bit that Pixel Art was relegated to the Creative corner.
Edit: A dedicated thread for writing is also a good idea... Or did you mean writing as in code? xP
*sniff sniff* I smell change. Run! Run for your lives!

In all seriousness, it might not be a bad idea to merge the two.

It's funny you say this because screenshots are pretty terrible for improving the entire art aspect of a game. All you're doing is showing off a section of an area most of the time and all people can comment on is the placement of a tree in that one shot. Very rarely do comments change the overall art direction or future methods. Plus I think it's better to criticize maps based on their spacing and layouts (something that can't be shown in a single shot).

Screenshots are very good for giving the audience a glimpse of what they're in for, but not much else. Posting an entire map, custom chipset, rows of sprite art, gameplay walk arounds, may grab more feedback and promote better habits. Seems in the screenshot topic. people don't ask for anything, they just dump it. There should be an atmosphere where people should be pushed to ask for whats beneficial rather than it being just a pimp drop off.

If anything else there could be a Game Art topic + a Writing/System topic, but Craze's solution is best.
I honestly haven't used any of the threads in question in years, because I haven't really developed games in that time (I am too busy catering to all of you!! (dont worry i love it))

If someone wanted to do a bit of requirements analysis on this... a bit of a Current State Assessment on the ...current state of things... and a little Future State Design (look at me using business processes!) all in more detail than what Craze alluded to, it would be much appreciated!

Don't see really point in merging the topics, it's not like there's a huge pile of them.

No & yes? I agree with most of the points you've made Craze but at the same time I love having a dedicated thread to just the visual side of the games being made here.

I agree with Tau, I see the point, but I always check the screenshot topic after logging in.
I don't think it's useless as it stands, but I don't see a problem with having a new one, I'd just rather not have to look through a thread of 3 mixed things when I want to see WIP screenshots.
IMHO, having separate threads for screenshots vs what-you're-up-to is fine as is. I've used the screenshot thread several times for the purpose of second opinion. What-are-you-up-to is more frivolous. "I'm scripting a walk animation". The difference between the two is one providing people a useful feedback mechanism, and the other being slightly better than a Welp topic.
