CREATOR OF PLANTS VS ZOMBIES LAID OFF A DAY AFTER PVZ2 WAS ANNOUNCED

PopCap has laid off Plants vs. Zombies creator George Fan, the day after announcing a sequel to the game.
You may not know George Fan by name, but I guarantee you know his work. His is the brain behind Plants vs. Zombies, one of the most wildly successful "casual" games of all time, a tower defense title that began life in 2009 as a fairly typical PopCap PC release and is now available on pretty much every platform known to man. Sunflowers and zombies have become PopCap's most instantly recognizable flagship characters, and after releasing no less than three separate retail collector's editions, the studio finally announced on Monday that a sequel is in development.
Sadly, and kind of amazingly, the man who got the ball rolling won't be around to help with the follow-up. PopCap confirmed yesterday that it was in the process of laying off approximately 50 employees, and while it didn't name names at the time, included among them is Senior Game Designer and Plants vs. Zombies creator George Fan.

PvZ was a great little tower defense game, and one of my all time favorite arcade games. The guy also created InsanAquarium, one of my other all time favorite arcade games (I didn't know this until now).
A year ago (thereabouts) PopCap was purchased by EA.
"We picked EA because they have recast their culture around making great digital games," said David Roberts, chief executive of PopCap, in a statement. "By working with EA, we'll scale our games and services to deliver more social, mobile, casual fun to an even bigger, global audience."
Combine this news with the recent revelation from an EA exec about no game will ever be greenlit without multiplayer and the bullshit microtransaction stuff they pulled with ThemePark re-release, I have low expectations for PvZ2. ("Send requests to 10 friends to unlock peashooter, or buy now for $0.99!") Ugh.
On a side note, if anyone ever hears about a Kickstarter by George Fan, let me know!

LockeZ
I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

So basically they hire him to get the sequel rights and make it look legit
let him work on the game for one day
and then fire him, and make it themselves
Seriously EA? Maybe I'm missing something like "the primary design part of this game is already done, and all that's left is bug-testing and marketing, so his contract is up." That would be unusual to happen before the game goes gold, if true, but not exactly unfair or anything. Or they may be cancelling the game because the public response on day 1 wasn't positive enough, which would be stupid and obnoxious, but kind of expected. But it wouldn't really surprise me if firing him on day 2 so they can make the game themselves and still credit the original game's designer as a co-director were actually exactly their plan; EA is full of a bunch of terrible human beings.

Taking LockeZ's post as a reason to absolutely not post another single reaction gif
I LIED AGAIN. LOTS AND LOTS OF PAIN AND ANGER.

ftr while this news does certainly suck, this is also my general frustration with EA in general.

I doubt he worked at all on PvZ2. I it's PopCap who have all the rights to the PvZ license or by extension EA. Popcap haven't exactly been a pinnacle of goodwill on their own either.
Never been a fan of PvZ or any tower defense games, but wow, pretty disgusting.
I see Craze's GIFs and raise this: (屮゜Д゜)屮 and (ノ゜Д゜)ノ ⌒┻━┻
As for the subject of the topic: Wow EA, just wow.

Jim Sterling's been warning us for years of EA's malevolance and stupidy.
Guys. I hate EA as much as the next guy. But in this case it's actually Popcap who are doing the downsizing. Maybe EA has something to do with it. But it's actually more likely that it's Popcap who are doing this all on their own.
@Shinan: Either way, PopCap chose EA, presumably because the culture of the company was in line with their own.
Well I, for one, am disappointed. Whatever happened to those plucky little game shops that earn their worth the hard way, proving that innovation and/or real quality are what counts?
Oh yeah, They get bought by EA, who fires the people who are responsible for the success.
