WHAT MOTIVATES YA?
Posts
I have a big problem with finding motivation to begin a new game. I mean, I write down some really good ideas, open up the editor, and then nothing. It goes nowhere. What's wrong with me? I have about 20 empty project folders sitting inside another folder. Anyway, what motivates you to start a new game and stick with it?
What motivates me to complete a project is:
1. The more detailed and complete the design document is,
2. The more I can foresee what kind of coding will be necessary and if I have the skills for it,
3. The less I can foresee what custom graphics I'll have to make and if I have the skills for it,
4. And the belief that this particular game would provide something innovative or entertaining in the long-term, both to me and to potential players.
When I drop a project it's usually because it requires too much custom stuff or because I don't think it's such a good project anymore.
It is rather common to have lots of unfinished or abandoned projects. Don't worry about it.

Where has this been my whole life!? Thanks Darken.
Reading topics like this is what motivates me to work on projects!
No. Actually, my biggest motivation is the fact that I've finished projects before. Whenever I look back at previous games I've made, I become really motivated to work on more.

Usually, starting a game and dicking around for a bit to make a town. Then I go looking for resources to steal and that usually inspires me. I'll make something with what I find.

Lol! You know we love you really, max~<3
What motivates me? Not sure. I just like playing around with the engines and if I come up with a great story, that.
Also, Nessy kicking my butt and asking me to do stuff. Yes, oh glorious leader! o7
I would be lying if I said those useless numbers named makerscore didn't mean a thing to me. They have indeed this akward motivational force XD.
Honestly? It's been so long since I finished my last game that I just kinda want to make a more polished finished product this time around. So far ambition has been my downfall.
Watching Disney movies. Just watched Beauty and the Beast last night, not going to lie, it motivated me to make a map just because of how beautiful that movie is. Disney movies have great atmosphere to them and inspire me to put together ugly crap I can put into my game.
Seeing my old stuff. And how terrible it is. And oh god why was it so terrible.
That's... sadly it. Because I'm far too busy playing JRPGs to actually work on my own sad imitation of the genre. .-.

srsly: I like to play around with mechanics. it's fun. sometimes I think of a story, too.

Seeing other amazing people's work in the indie development as well as actively discussing development (which is why I'm always in IRC). Especially when I know the person on a friend level, and I want to keep up with them and show that I can make games, too.
Music is a huge, huge inspiration for me. Sometimes I just listen to a track and visualize it, and I take it from there. Most of the music is new age or classical. Great for stimulating those brain-cells. :)
And other people's amazing dedication to their own projects as well.
