It's a song about ghosts partying!

ETA Also the opening of Cavalleria Rusticana is super pretty

Basically I'm here to get excited about all the old shit nobody cares about. :V
I'm not a fan of music numbers. I watched them once in the Aladdin movies but after that I skip past them when I rewatch it. I'm glad the tv show didn't adopt them. But I won't shit on your right to enjoy them >.>

Well thanks for coming in to say that and also giving people permission to disagree! That was an important contribution to the thread!
I theoretically love musicals. But often I have a bit of a hard time getting into them. Because the concept is kinda silly. It's just so incredibly melodramatic. But that is also its charm.

I know that most of the times I have gone to see a musical (stage musicals, it's sometimes a bit different in the movies) I'm often taken aback at first when they start singing but after a very short while I'm completely into it. There's like a contract of sorts in the opening number or similar where the audience is asked to suspend their disbelief because this is what this is going to be.

So usually by those emotional peaks there at the end of the acts I'm fully invested and crying a bit because it is awesome. And melodramatic. But awesome melodrama.

Of course it seems too like musicals can sort of be divided into two groups-ish. Where one is the classic melodrama full of song and the other is the meta-musical that can't help but comment on being a musical in some way and point out how silly it is that they are singing.

In the end I guess I don't see nearly enough musicals. I've seen like a handful. In fact I've almost been in more musicals than I've seen. (My musical resume could almost be impressive, I've played in among others Annie, Showboat, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, The Full Monty and The Sound of Music. Of course I'm not a very musical person so I've had mostly non-singing parts :)
As far as I can tell you didnt miss any talks about musicals

They missed the return of a fascist imbecile comparing musicals to radiation waste or something. That's at least entertaining!

Musicals are interesting in that you're sort of asked to make the numbers part diegetic, part not.

This video has an interesting analysis of musicals and the diegesis issues (and makes it really accessible for non-film crit people)
I recommend the whole thing just in general, really. Lindsay owns.

I tend to divide them into pre- and post- Joe Papp, myself; it's sort of a division of musical styles. I'm really not a fan of the modern Papp-inspired style, as can probably be inferred from my preference for the prewar stuff.

But yeah, I'm not a big fan of the meta stuff. It feels too much like "Yeah, we're too cool to take this seriously, look at how much we know this is silly." Reminds me too much of puberty and trying to look mature. (Yes, congratulations, you have realised that normal people do not sing their feelings. How very astute of you.)

In the end I guess I don't see nearly enough musicals. I've seen like a handful. In fact I've almost been in more musicals than I've seen.

This is me with opera. XD Though I have turned to youtube to supplement my education because with things like, say, Carmen, you don't really get a great feel for the entire work when you're just a chorus member.

Carmen for the chorus:
There's a town, and this couple, and then a lady appears and is totally hot. She gets in a fight with some other lady and gets sent to jail. Then time passes while you sit in the dressing room backstage and draw and then Escamillo the toreador shows up and he's awesome! Then Carmen is like, Hey guy from the couple come be a nomad with me and we're all YEAH IT'S AWESOME YOU SHOULD COME!

Then you're smuggling shit in the countryside and... IDK you're sitting around for a while and Carmen is doing fortunetelling with cards and it's intense. Then the lady from the couple shows up and is all, "Hey, guy from the couple, please come back I am wholesome and sad!" and then she leaves, then we're all like, "OK how do we get our contraband in? Oh, we have girls! They will be hot at the guards and they'll let us through!"

Then there's an exciting time because we're at the bullfight and people are selling things and stuff is neat. Then we all go watch a bullfight and we come out of the bullfight and WTF THIS GUY JUST MURDERED THIS LADY HOLY SHIT! And that's the end.

It's rather more interesting with the non-chorus bits.

La Boheme (which was later "adapted" into RENT) is even shorter for the chorus: It goes "Yay, it's Christmas!" and then "It's winter and we're peasants" and that's it. You do get to watch Musetta smash a plate, which was the highlight of the opera for me.
The only thing I'm wondering is what moved Max McGee to snap like that all of a sudden... XD

Musicals can often be great. I love Sweeney Todd and Disney musicals like The Lion King and Mulan. I also liked Hairspray.

I cannot wait for this musical by Damien Chazelle coming out in December of this year.

Edit I just realized people were talking about stage musicals mostly. I haven't watched any live musicals, but I would like to go see one. As for another musical film i forgot, I actually really liked Into the Woods. I've heard the stage original is even better.

I've heard from fans of the original that the ItW movie was a crap adaptation. I think it mangled a bunch of the story or something? IDK I've only ever seen the original once, in a high school performance.

Yeah, I'm in the minority that love the film becausw of how audaciously off kilter and crazy off the wall most of it is. Plus it sounds fab. Maybe it's just because the original concept is so bonkers and it's so fun to watch these iconic characters just screw up their lives so badly. And deconstruction of tropes and such like is entertaining to witness.

Yeah, I know, I just haven't seen the original which is maybe why the film made more of an effect on me. It'd be cool to see the stage version too.

It's pretty boss. Like, even as just a small-time kiddie production, it was great.
