Plato's Republic

Pathway: Desire+ is a game created for RPG Maker VX Ace. This game features a side view combat system and some pretty nifty graphics. While I did find some problems in the game, it still might be worth your time to check out.

Skip the story section of the review if you don't want spoilers.

The game is about a girl who wakes up in a cave and doesn't know how she got there. She will meet two other companions who also happen to be there for some reason. Together the three of them will adventure to stop a ritual involving the main character being melded together with two other gods... Or something like that. I'm not quite sure about the logistics of it, but it doesn't seem to matter because you're going somewhere for some reason. The story is there, but you don't need to pay much attention to it.

What should you pay attention to? How about the excellent graphics and well chosen sound track. The game features custom black and white graphics. And everything looks like it fits in this game. The sprites and tiles are very well done. I also really liked the menus and the the little windows that came up when you opened treasure chests (because the little details really matter.) The sound is well chosen, but I did notice that once a track was finished that it would pause for a while before starting again. This is quite noticeable in the very lengthy battles.

The battle system is pretty good.

The game is pretty linear. It does have paths that lead to treasure chests or extra bosses, but for the most part you will be going from the start to the end. There are no towns, no side quests, no puzzles, and nothing else to do with your time. This is a combat heavy game. At least the combat is somewhat enjoyable. At the end of each battle your party will receive skill points. You can then spend those skill points on active skills (like a special sword attack) or passive skills (like an ATK boost.) You can then equip some of your skills to your characters. I thought this idea was well designed because it does give you some control of what you want your character to do. I also noticed that a couple of the skills feature the Yanfly cool down system. This means that you need to wait a certain number of turns to use powerful skills.

I spent my points on extra turns.

While I found the game mostly enjoyable there were some minor things that did happen. On two occasions the game crashed in battle. (This can be a bit annoying since some battles are quite long, especially the final boss!) There is also a noticeable problem where enemies won't disappear properly at the end of battle. Other than these issues the game is rather fun to play and challenging as well. I give this game a 3.5 / 5.

Thanks a lot for the review! I'm glad you enjoyed it. The score is more than fair, too.
Just a little thing, while I know the game isn't big on story, maybe you could put the spoilers in a spoiler tag if reviews allow it, or at least give a warning before them.
It makes me happy to see my little game getting attention.
BTW: What's with the review title?:P

I put a hidden section in the review, it's up to people who read it if they want to see. Plato is a Greek author who wrote dialogue about a famous philosopher known as Socrates. In a book called "The Republic" Socrates talks about a cave.
Yeah I vaguely remember the cave story from history class. I didn't know it was part of the republic, tho. Thanks for clearing that up and for the spoiler tag.
