Description

What're We Cooking?

A full game cooked up in two weeks (and a weekend)! The cookoff begins on February 1st and wraps up on February 17th where all games must be submitted before the end of the day. Check the event page (and your account's timezone) to see when the event ends in your local time.

The Kitchen Suite

The tool of choice is RPG Maker VX Ace Lite! It is the free but feature limited version of RPG Maker VX Ace. The restrictions of Ace Lite are as follows:

Maximum Database Entries
  • 10 Actors
  • 10 Classes
  • 126 Skills
  • 16 Items
  • 60 Weapons
  • 60 Armors
  • 30 Enemies
  • 30 Troops
  • 25 States
  • 110 Animations
  • 4 Tilesets
  • 10 Common events
  • 100 Switches
  • 100 Variables
  • There are no other database restrictions

Map & Event Limitations
  • 20 Maps
  • 10 Events per map
  • Call Common Event is disabled

Script Limitations
  • The script editor is disabled.
  • The 'Script' event command is disabled. Other script commands in Assign Variable, Condition Branch, and Move Event are still enabled.

These are strictly implementation restrictions that you are free to work around. Need more than sixteen items? Make your key items weapons nobody can equip! Want more than ten playable characters? Perhaps when one leaves the party you could overwrite its name and stats with your new character! Twenty five troops too limiting? Make a troop that adds random enemies via battle events!

Please note: While it is possible to add your own scripts to a game through devious means the spirit of the Ace Lite restriction rules in this contest. Injecting scripts is not allowed beyond using the enabled script calls for their intended purposes. Of course changing the database caps through other means is also right out. Any game found violating these restrictions will be disqualified.

You can download RPG Maker VX Ace Lite here.

If you want to see what you can do under such restrictions Deckiller has made a game in Ace Lite called Kolmesarta. Feel free to check it out!

Your Ingredients!

Everything in the kitchen is allowed! There is no theme to the cook off besides obeying the restrictions of Ace Lite. There are no resource limitations for this contest as Ace Lite does not restrict what you can import into your game. Whip out the spice rack! Prepare the vegetables! Go hog wild! It's a free for all!

Nobody wants a half baked morsel though. The only requirement beyond using RPG Maker VX Ace Lite is that the game must be complete. Only finished games are wanted here!

For the Tastiest of Them All

We've got four judges reuniting to sample the delicacies of all participants: The RTP Princess Liberty, The Amazing Artist Nessiah, the Makerscore Master Deckiller, and the Ludicrously Lazy GreatRedSpirit! Their number one game will received a boxed copy of RPG Maker VX Ace generously donated by Liberty! The lead developer of the winning game will be contacted by Liberty to make shipping arrangements.

That isn't the only prize though! After submissions are closed there will also be a two week voting phase for all members of RMN to vote for their favorite game! Voting will be open from February 18th to March 11th. The winner will receive their choice of any item excluding RPG Maker VX Ace from the RPGMakerWeb.com store courtesy of RPGMakerWeb!

There is always the achievement badge for participating too! One of a kind will not be made available again! Submit to that completionist tingle and take part!

So in addition to my left index finger effectively not being there, now my computer mouse is sticking and I'm accidentally dragging things I'm not meaning to drag.

Looks like this is going to be a long-distance sprint.
Speaking of which, I should get started on my game sometime soon.
Well Crap I used the VX ACE from the Download page. I thought it was the lite as I didn't see a lite when I downloaded it. Guess this means I'm out of luck lol

( http://www.rpgmakerweb.com/download ) No lite here!

Oh well good luck everyone and thank you for the trial VX Ace I like the way the editor works.
Oh dear...It has to be approved before you can submit it for the event?

...That cuts like...3 days off!

EEEEEEEEEEEE *gets back to work!*

EDIT: ....Ok, maybe I'm worried for nothing. Bare bones opening is done, battle system is 100% planned on paper, bosses have their gimmick/strategies planned out, First dungeon is carved (just needs decoration and chests), and I just carved out the second dungeon just now (needs decoration, more spice, chests, and boss event). And the plot is 100% planned.

I...think I'm overreacting...
Well, I added a river for some spice.

It's still missing the decoration, but looks good enough for a dungeon draft, you think?

...Wait...BAH, I forgot to add the bridges before taking the screenshot! >_<

Download VX Ace Lite for free via Steam. It's a separate install.
should I make a separate engine entry for Ace Lite or what?

Please do, haha. Then people could also differentiate on what to expect when downloading a game.

Craze
why would i heal when i could equip a morningstar

It's not a different engine. People just don't know how to read.
Dungeons one and two are decorated. Just missing chests, which will come when I'm making items and the battles and balance and stuff. And the boss trigger events are done.

Final dungeon is "carved". Thank you sample maps for the base. Just need to decorate and add loot.

...Towns...how am I gonna do towns with so few events and so little time........

...I hope people don't mind very small towns. >_>

Am I the only one getting a script error while trying to Show Picture in battle screens?
Yeah, pictures seem to be glitchy in this version. I got crashes trying to erase them from a map screen.

(Also sprites "lag behind" whenever you pan the screen. This version seems to be rather sloppy. :\)

RPG Maker Vx Lite craches with centered pictures.
You need to reset them in upper-left coordinates with "show picture x upper-left" before erasing it.

Best course of action:
Fadeout screen
Show picture 1 upperleft
erase picture 1

WTF
Also, most premade maps come configured with graphics that don't come with lite. Oh, Enterbrain, you lazy mistress.

Anyways I'm completely uninspired and out of ideas besides HARD MONSTERS & SKILL POINTS ARWAHAWG
But I can't come up even with an excuse for the plot =T
I'm officially in. Good luck to all!

Is it ok if I post engine questions here?

I have one: how can I make a panorama larger than 544x416 that I can walk on and it scrolls ok, like it's a map?

Sure. I've been asking tons of questions and gotten a lot of good answers.

Uhh...That I don't know. Sorry. :(

Tips from a writer at heart:
1) Think small. Something that can be resolved relatively quickly. For example, my plot involves a quick military mission. Get in, do mission, get out.
2) Think about your other game mechanics. You want hard monsters. Maybe it's a hunt? Maybe there's a kingdom ruled by monsters you're trying to get rid of. Maybe it's a gladiator story? Think about what you're trying to express with your combat. That might make the lightbulb go on.
3) If all else fails, just work on the gameplay and maps and stuff and eventually you'll come up with something to justify linking an ice cavern with a flaming tower, or whatever it is you make just for the cool factor :P

--

Just finished off the final boss cutscene. It's official. I need to finish and submit this game. That scene is awesome. My mapping might be only meh, my combat is probably going to have a few holes...But my plot I'm happy with. Well...except that some people are going to facepalm and go "This is the stupidest military move in history. Why would they do that?!".

Next on the list...The extended ending sequence. Then, decorating the final dungeon. Step 3, finally making the monsters and skills and praying to the 9 divines I can balance it. And then finally, step 4, the inns and shops and NPCs.

I think I can do it. :D
Can someone explain to me the "features" thing on actors and enemies?
Seiromem
I would have more makerscore If I did things.
6375
The features thing allows you to customize the characters battle strategies.
The elemental rate is the rate an element does damage, 75% elemental rate means that 25% of the elemental damage is gone, while 150% means it'll do 50% better.
All other rates are the same only they apply to different things.
Like how effective a debuff or state is.

The parameters, I have no idea about except a vague concept of Ex-Parameter, witch allows you to up the chance you hit, or lower the chance you hit with the HIT option, same thing with CRIT which adds crit chance etc.
With attack, the Attack Element thing turns all that actors basic attack to do that element damage. For example, if you have a fire attack element, that actor will do fire damage.
The attack State with the % is what state the actor may give with the %chance of it happening, for example, if you have the poison state with 55% chance, each attack the actor does will have a 55% chance of poisoning the target.
Attack times is self-explanatory, it allows the actor to attack more than once, however I don't think it works with spells, I'm not sure, it might.
Add-Skill is also self-explanatory, while seal skill seals a skill meaning that actor cannot use that skill.
The equip thing allows you to lock equipment for that actor, or give that actor certain equipment.
For the special flag, there are misc. things like Auto-battle,
Substitute I have no idea While preserve TP I don't know either =P
The Boss collapse effect just makes an enemy die much more epicly.
The party abilities are pretty self-explanatory.
Pretty much all of this barring the Equip and certain other things can be done with enemies too.

Hope I helped!
In hindsight, I'm pretty sure someone had a tutorial with this stuff xP
@Calunio: Features are just extra ways of making actors and characters different.
For example, let's say you have two actors that are both warriors but you want only one of them to have extra magic skills. You'd go under the actor tab and set the skill under the features area.
You can also set specific hit rates, evasion rates, critical hit rates, change the number of attack times for a character, set special party commands. It's very useful and helps create diverse classes and actors within those classes. (Hint: Same deal with enemies!)

Substitute makes the character take damage for people with less HP. Like Cover in final fantasy. It's best to put this on a status and not on a character, unless you want the guy to tank for his team ALL the time.

Preserve TP makes your TP not reset to a random number every time you end a battle. I think.

Eh? It was broken for you?

I had no trouble making an "objectives" CE that made your objectives pop up early on...Although I'm really questioning if that's even needed anymore.
